Their Hainanese Chicken is made with a hundred year old recipe containing 16 types of Herbs and spices. The Chicken Rice Shop is on the alleyway with JBSD Tofu and Go Go Pasta near the Zhong Xiao Dun Hwa MRT. Their Hainanese Chicken is very tender flavorful and a big portion at a very fair price (around 350 NT per person). This is kind of a family style restaraunt and not that good for dining solo. Luck Starting Pavilion is an old shaved ice cream parlor nestled in the Shi Lin Nightmarket in an alleyway close to the Giant Fried Chicken and the Theatre. Shaved ice cream is an ingenious blend of the deliciousness of both creamy sweet icecream and crunchy yummy shaved ice. They take their own blended block of ice cream and shred it up into pillowy layers of shaved ice cream. It has the flavor of ice cream with the texture like layers of shaved ice, but much softer. Everything on the menu is under 100 NT. You must give this unique dessert a try when you visit the Shi Ling Nightmarket.

Round Sushi is a chain Kaiten Sushi restaurant at the Breeze Center that rivals Hi Sushi in quality and expedient Japanese cuisine. Their prices vary just like Hi Sushi, and the quality of the items reflect the reasonable hike in price. The decor is simple and bright.  Expect to spend at least 500 NT per person to have a full experience at this place. Profile

Indulge Experimental Bistro is a hidden treasure among the restaurants and lounges in Taipei. They are tucked away in a seemingly residential section of an alley near the Zhong Xiao FuXing MRT Station. Indulge offers some of the finest cocktails available and at a fair price. At around 350 NT, you can try the  concoctions of their reknown mixologists. The food is worth a try, but their appetizers and late night snack section are safer choices than their dinner menu, which contains entrees like "Spagetti with Wild Flower Crab and East Port Mullet Roe Slice". That entree is an example of Indugle's use of local Taiwanese ingredients to create new European influenced dishes to bring something unique to the food scene. Chimika Submarines is a mom and pop submarine sandwich shop near the Taipower Building MRT. They not only serve submarine sandwiches, but also serve burgers, chicken sandwiches, and hot dogs. Their menu is low priced and most items are under 100 NT. This is more of a Taiwanese rendition of submarine sandwiches, and the ingredients used in the sandwich are very local and home made. Their sub sandwiches are otherworldy, since they put too much lettuce in them, but that can be remedied simply by pulling excess lettuce out of the sandwich. Big Pillar is a small Taiwanese bistro located in the NTU rear entrance area. Their dining space is really small and packs up really fast during peak hours, but their food is worth the wait. Evan's Burger

Profile

Evans burger is a burger joint / brunch restaurant chain that serves a higher quality burger at a reasonable price. It is hard to find a satisfactory burger in Taiwan. Evans burger is definitely one of the better burgers on this island. They also set the bar in terms of service for these "gourmet burger" restaurants. An average meal would run about 250 NT per person, which is a lot for a burger like this, but if you visit on a wednesday they have a cheeseburger set for 100 NT. I would not mind dining here for 100 NT, but I would hesitate returning on normal days because the prices are a bit high for what you are getting. I seldom eat hamburgers in Taiwan because I haven't found a place where the burger's quality justifies the price. Evan's burger price is right for their burger, try visiting on a wednesday.

Alleyway BBQ is an asian style BBQ house with manly locations including one in the NEO19 building in the bustling Sin Yi District. The Chinese name Hu Tong 胡同 invokes Beijing style cuisine, but the establishment is more like one of those pervasive Japanese style BBQ houses with a little more class. The prices are slightly higher than the average Japanese BBQ house, and each individual can expect to spend at least 1000 NT for a nice meal. They have excellent service and a posh clean atmosphere, and you can come here and dine freshly grilled filet mignon, sirloin steaks, lamb chops, butter chicken, and other bbq-able items you can think of. This place is a haven for those who miss a nice greasy cheesy steak sandwich. The menu is economical and shouldn't cost you over 300 NT for a decent meal. The classic cheese steak set with cheese fries upgrade is only 225 NT. This is definitely a unique eatery in this city.

However, compared to the other options available in this 1 km radius from the main campus area, Han Family State is actually not bad. They also offer Korean BBQ with copper plates at this restaurant. Rakumenya 樂麵屋

Profile

Rakumenya is a Ramen Shop located near the Zhong Xiao Fuxing MRT. They are unique in how they let the customers customize the strength of the soup base and the hardness of the Ramen noodles. These type of Ramen shops are hard to come by in Taiwan, and it is very reminiscient of Shin Sen Gumi or Orochan in Los Angeles. The two popular soup bases served here are the pork broth and their specialty chicken-vegetable broth. For under 250 NT, you can select a soup base variation that you desire. Each bowl comes with a few basic slices of cha siu, egg, and vegetables, but you can add other ingredients for a nominal fee. They have the best tasting noodles that I have had so far in Taiwan: al dente, very snappy, and Q-licious. Dazzling Thai Cafe is a spin-off from the popular Dazzling Cafe Restaurants, but they serve Thai food instead of general "western" food minus the honey toast. If you are lucky you can get their two person meal set that rings in at 980 NT, but I do not recommend it because the food is not that amazing. Eddy's Cantina is probably the mexican restaurant with the most legitimate mexican roots in Taipei. Nestled on a sloping 3-way intersection of Dansui, Eddy's Cantina brings tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and salsa to a unsuspecting part of Taiwan. Entrees are about 200 NT with the option to upgrade to a meal for 85 NT to add three sides and a drink. The ingredients are kind of authentic, but the flavors seem to be dulled to suit the Taiwanese taste bud. Still, it is probably one of the best mexican restaurants in Taiwan. If you don't feel like making the long ride up to Dansui, Eddy's Cantina has opened a new location in Tien Mu. This is decent place to have some tacos over ice cold brews.

I recommend that you give these one of thse Taiwanese particle steak places a try, and if you are in the area, try Taurus Steaks.

Review

Celestial Clay Jar is a very traditionalesque chinese restaurant that offers many slowly cooked items from their special earthen cookware. They pride themselves in being very health conscious, and so their dishes are flavored just enough, but not overly oily and heavy. The average price of a dish is 250 NT, so you will probably spend about 500 NT a person here. The service staff seemed very friendly and recommended what they thought was the most poular dishes without feeling like they are pressuring you to purchase the most expensive items. Also, the server we had was very attentive to our needs and courteous in accomodating us. This is a very interesting place to dine especially for those who might want to try a light meal that is not flavorless.

The Love River in Kaohsiung City is a very scenic and leisurely spot enjoy an evening stroll. Among the many dining options around this area, there is this 3 story building that radiates itself over its competitors on the riverside. Tokyo Sakaba is a 100 NT taiwanese stir fry restaurant that has a pretty stocked alcohol list, sake in particular. Most of the famaliar items from those "beer station", "hot stir fry" restaurants are offered here, but they are not very good renditions in comparison to the better establishments that exist in Taipei. Try some other restaurant if you are in the area because this place is more like a last resort.
